Beginning this fall semester, offices for the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program will be on Level 2 of the Reitz Union co-located with the David and Wanda Brown Center for Leadership & Service.

The historic first-generation student support program, named after President Emeritus, Dr. Bernard and Chris Machen, had previously been located in Tigert Hall

The change of location is an effort to maximize access for students, particularly as the program has expanded to serve 50 more scholars this year bringing the total to 1,250 annually.

“Being located in the union puts support for first-generation college students at the forefront,” said Dr. Leslie Pendleton, senior director for the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program. “We are excited for scholars to build more seamless connections between our office and the other departments located in the Reitz Union.”

In addition to the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program, the Reitz Union houses the Career Connections Center, the Brown Center for Leadership & Services, Multicultural & Diversity Affairs, Student Activities & Involvement, Sorority & Fraternity Affairs, Student Legal Services, Student Government, GatorWell Health Promotion Services, Gator 1 Central, SG Graphics & Copy Center, SG Bike Repair, SG Print Lab, dining & retail spaces, and the Office of Events Services.

The Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program helps ensure a vibrant future for the state by enabling qualified Florida high school graduates to attend the state’s flagship university. Learn more at https://opportunity.ufl.edu/.
